About Open Heart Yoga School

"At Open Heart I found a different kind of yoga than I had ever experienced before. A yoga with compassionate energy that flows thick through the room and in and out of each person there. A yoga that taps into something deeper than body movement- a healing, exploration based, therapeutic yoga." - Student, Colie Taico

Open Heart Yoga School is located in Lloyd Street Court at 209 Lloyd Street, Suite 210, Carrboro, North Carolina. It opened in April, 2010, and was founded by Allison Dennis and Ti Harmony with much help from their yoga community.

We offer spiritually oriented yoga with a devotional focus and all classes are donation based. Please bring your own mat to class because it's more sanitary. You can carry your good yoga vibes with you to help in your future practices, and hopefully, you can always have your favorite mat. We will have a few loaners in case you forget yours. For more information about our school and all of its offerings, please contact us.

Donation Based Yoga

The Philosophy
In offering yoga classes by donation we trust that Yoga is intended for all earnest spiritual seekers and we stand in the long tradition of yoga in which people of any financial status may study the profound teachings of Yoga and God and Life. Donation based yoga does not mean "free". It means giving something of value in a quantity you are able and that reflects the benefits you get from your class time so we can all support one another.

In this tradition the students express their gratitude by generously supporting the teacher. Those with more ability to pay offer more, while those with less ability to pay offer less. The teacher in turn expresses gratitude to his or her own teachers and to the Divine for having received both the teachings of Yoga and the motivation to follow them. By deepening the experience and practice of Yoga, and by sharing Yoga as fully and deeply as possible; the teacher is honoring a commitment to the welfare and liberation of the students.

The Practical
Suggested Donation is $5 - $20. If possible, please consider leaving $10-15 which is the going rate at area studios. We won't turn you away if you pay less and we won't turn you away if you pay more. In general money is the preferred form of the energy exchange that you may give, but there are other ways to give. Allison or Ti are happy to talk with you about that. And please know that if after reading this, if you don't come to class at all or as often as you would like because money is an issue, then we are failing in our mission and might as well be charging a set rate and purposely keeping out those who can't pay. We are endeavoring to have a new way, and we will be learning as we go along. As teachers, we would rather have full classes with people paying less than half full classes with everyone paying more.

CASH OR CHECK ONLY. We do not have a computer, we do not take credit cards, and there is no "check in" for class. There will be a box near the front door of the studio where you can leave your donation. Each donation you leave goes directly to the teacher whose class you are attending. You are not donating to the studio, but to the teacher, so PLEASE MAKE CHECKS OUT TO THE TEACHER, not to the studio. The teacher then offers money to the studio to cover costs. If your check is returned, we will charge you a ridiculous sum and force you to spend an entire class in Hanumanasana (forward splits).

Although we do not offer pass cards or monthly unlimited in the traditional sense, you can make a donation to a teacher for multiple classes or a set amount of time, eg. a month or a year, and the teacher will be happy to help you track your donation if that is helpful for you. You decide how much you are giving for each class/month/year. We will help you with this while allowing for anonymity. You may also just show up and donate anonymously.

Spiritually Oriented Yoga

By offering spiritually oriented yoga, we intend to teach from a place higher than our small ego or self. We endeavor to teach from the feeling heart as opposed to the mind. And we teach yoga as a path to liberation so that all of us may dissolve separation and isolation and experience the Oneness of Being. Our intention is healing, not only for the body and mind, but for the subtle spirit permeating and surrounding us.

As teachers at Open Heart we aim to not be attached to the fruits of our labors, but instead, to offer it all to God, in whatever form is relevant for each of us. God can be Shiva or Krishna or the Divine Mother; God can be Nature; God can be Jesus; God can be light; God can be the Supreme Consciousness or the Primordial Energy of Everything; God can be love or peace or compassion or kindness; God can be your partner or your child or every person you meet. God is all around us and within us; God is everything. To us, devotion means being of service to the God/the Divine in everyone.
